What is the pickled cucumber good for…

…in the camera workshop?!

Today I have to clean a Sigma 24-105 1:4 OS – inside/outside. (in fact, I hate Sigmas…).

First problem: to disassemble the front lens, I have to screw out the plastic ring – which has no holes for the tool. In such cases you have to use a cylindric tool, which ends in a rubber part, which grabs the ring through friction.

I dont have that tool. But fortunately, i have some empty bottles. I put some double sided tape on the edge, and .. voila! Works fine.

* by the way, don’t forget to apply 2 drops of alcohol on the thread. Helps a lot the unscrewing!

Hello there my mentor! I’m so glad I finally am able to post a comment on your great blog. I cannot understand why this blog is not as busy as I would have thought. Are there so few repair enthusiasts in the whole wide world?

Okay, I have a billion questions over the years that Google has not been able to help me out on. Most photography forums you find on Google search are of people who mostly know almost nothing about the gear technically — they’re mostly just taking pictures.

Now, present most pressing question: has there ever been anyone you know who has ever revived a 70D from its notorious “dead motherboard” problem? On Aliexpress I found them selling some “power chips M04” but there are never any reviews and when I ordered some, they didn’t seem to work (my soldering skills were bad at the time though). I have subsequently discovered so many other places in other cameras with the same “M04” chip.

What is your own experience? I have 1,000 questions left after this (lol).
Cheers and keep up the good work; and please post more often

I’m sure with your long experience you cannot be totally helpless. Electronics are similar in operation at board level and trust me, I’ve read up most of your activities here

  3. Sci-fi 😀
I tried to remove some nameplates and fronts like this, never succeeded 😀 ( I have that rubber tool… it’s rubbish… you will not miss it…)
    Great job 🙂

Opinion, question?
