18-55 non-IS – is it easy or not to repair?

Of course, is the cheapest zoom, and  if the flex for the aperture has broken, You can buy it for 2 dollars, and You will find some videos on the youtube, how to change it.

But don’t be surprised, if after assembly You get this quality:

The explanation is very simple: to get access to the flex cable, You have to disassemble two lens elements, which were adjusted together for coaxiality in the factory.

After unscrewing this 3 screws, You will see, that the front element is not centered to the back one, as the screws are “larger then necessary”.

If You take the time, and You make some test photos, then again, and again and again, You can center them perfectly. You just have to make a test photo after oving the two pieces in any possible place.

But after then, here is the result:

Amazing diffenence, isn’t it? But only for the adjustment You can calculate with one hour labour….

  1. Hi,
thank you for amazing job you did for all DIYers, I have a handy advice for someone as stupid as me who did not mark position of the coaxial bushings 😦
You can connect your camera to PC via USB cable through EOS utility and turn on PC live view mode and 200% zoom, now you can set up lens coaxiality in few seconds with no headache 😉

Opinion, question?
